Seasons are normally depicted as several months together Spring is generally
known in the garden as March, April and May. However even within these months
there are season variations depending on where you may be in the country.
Spring makes a start in early February in the very South-West of Britain.
Mid-March Spring generally has reached western areas and on average two weeks
later it has advanced inland. Eastern Highlands may not seen the signs of
Spring until early May.
Early Spring
The amount of work required in a garden naturally increased as the
season progresses and all manor of flowers, shrubs and the dreaded weeds start
to take hold. Here are just a few ideas of work required at this time of year.
Lawns:
· Rake over and reseed and worn or bare patches that have appeared over Winter.
· Apply some Spring fertiliser when the frost has gone and the lawns not waterlogged.
· Mid-Season, mow the grass as it's growth dictates, set the cut high for the initial couple of cuts, never more than half the length of the grass.
Roses:
· Finish planting any new roses with bare roots again waiting for the frost to go and the ground not too wet.
· Prune any repeating climbing, shrub, bush and miniature rose bushes.
Trees & Shrubs:
· Plant any bare rooted plants/trees
· Cut out flowering shoots of Winter flowering shrubs - such as Winter Jasmine
· Prune any large-flowered clematis
Bulbs, Tubers and seeds:
· Lift, divide and replant any snowdrops once the flowers have faded.
· Remove fading flowers from daffodils and any other late Winter-flowering plants, but don't remove the foliage until this has died down.
· Feed any bulbs with a general fertiliser as soon as you see and leaves start to appear.
· Start to propagate seeds indoors or under glass. Hardy annual seeds may be able to be planted outdoors if a mild early Spring, but protect against any frost that still may come along, this could be something as simple as some old carpet or clothes.
General Maintenance: ·
Hoe to remove all weeds to prevent them
from seeding and also taking nutrients from the real plants. ·
Complete all preparation digging and
ensure all perennial weeds are destroyed ·
Clear any early weeds from paths, patios
and driveways before they get too established. ·
Clean stone paths and drives to kill any
algae formed and could cause slipping.
